Woody’s Picks – Final Three Bowl Games

January 6, 2010

Orange Bowl — Iowa v. Georgia Tech (under 50′).  Like most of the other big gms with a solid D this bowl ssn, expect little action, lots of running, lots of punting.

GMAC Bowl — Troy v. Central Michigan (under 63).  Like most of the other bowl gms in really frigid weather this bowl ssn, expect little action, lots of running, lots of punting.

BCS Title Game — Texas v. Alabama (over 45).  Most expect a slugfest a la TX v. OK or TX v. NEB.  But Bama is not nearly as good on D as either of those two, nor is there any QB or O in all of the much-weaker-than-folks-will-admit SEC to rival McCoy and the Horns.  TX will score early and often on way to a rout.  Wouldn’t it be fun to see Horns and Boise just show up next week on some H.S. Field  in Iowa to decide the true national champion on YouTube?

Woody’s Picks – Bowl Week 2

December 22, 2009

Interesting first three bowls:  won a laugher, lost a laugher and had a bad beat with :20 remaining in the third.  The bowl season will be a success only if one can capture those close calls like the NM Bowl, so I hope  a break or two comes our way.  Here we go with the down and dirty for the upcoming week of bowls; may your holiday pigskin by jolly. Please Login or Register to read the rest of this content.

Woody’s Pics – New Mexico, St. Petersburg, New Orleans Bowls

December 19, 2009

Okay, so here we go into the great unknown that is the bowl season — which teams are motivated, which don’t care, which have had coaching changes that matter, which will react well to a long layoff and which won’t? The bottom line is bowl games are a crapshoot that is hard to navigate with any certainty; be wary, my friends. The one thing I’ve discovered over the past 15 seasons is that bowl totals are fertile ground from which to reap a year-end bounty. Please Login or Register to read the rest of this content.

Woody’s Picks – Army/Navy Game

December 11, 2009

LW (3-4) A couple of plays would’ve made that a 6-1, with TX being the lone whiff; Huskers have really been a nemesis TY.  The CMU rout of OH, in every way but on the scoreboard, was particularly painful to watch.

Woody’s Picks – Week 12 UPDATED 11/20/09

November 20, 2009

LW (5-5) Interesting week; the Ws and Ls were mostly runaways.  I will say that I felt pretty good about salvaging a winning wk when KU led, 17-16, with just 7:30 left in the gm, but a facemask penalty on 3rd-and-15 undid KU (and us).  Biggest head-scratcher of all was BYU.  I can only think they were looking ahead to AF and UT, which goes to show how dicey things can be when a tm is completely unfocused.

Woody’s Picks – Week 11 11/12/09

November 13, 2009

LW (7-5) Another positive week.  Pop quiz:  You outgain your opponent 325-180, holding him to 7 first downs and 1/14 on 3rd down.  Your opp commits 104 yds in penalties.  You punt just twice, and you outgain your opp on return yds 139-46.  Do you cover a 4-pt line?

Woody’s Picks – Week 10 11/05/09

November 6, 2009

LW (4-5) Pretty good considering the nonsense that ensued in the NEB and ARK gms.  The Black Shirts were awesome; too bad the QB had to throw BAY an easy pick-6.  And I’m not a conspiracy-minded guy, but one could certainly look askance at the final couple of minutes of that Razorback affair.  I’m just sayin’ . . .
