Top 20 for October 26th, 2008

October 31, 2008

When Eric and I sat down and did our individual voting for the week we agreed on 14 of the 20 votes exactly, and our top ten picks were the exact same as well. I would have to say that was the most my recording partner and I have ever agreed upon when it comes to rankings, and without too many bit time matchups this coming weekend, I don’t think things will change much in the coming week.

1) Texas

2) Alabama

3) Penn State

4) Oklahoma

5) Florida

6) Georgia

7) USC

8) Texas Tech

9) Utah

10) BYU

11) Boise State

12) Ohio State

13) Oklahoma State

14) Missouri

15) TCU

16) LSU

17) Tulsa

18) Ball State

19) Florida State

20) North Carolina

Receiving Votes: Minnesota

Honorable Mention: Virginia. Though the Wahoos are far from being out of the hole, they have put together a very impressive October that culminated with a victory over the Yellow Jackets in Atlanta.

NBL Bowl Outlook 10/27/2008

October 31, 2008

At this point in the season we expect the picture to be clearer on who will be receiving a BCS bowl invite and still be in the running for the national championship game, but the picture has only become muddier especially when you look at the teams from Non-BCS conferences who might receive an automatic bid, and possibly qualify for an at-large bid as well.

National Champtionship Penn State Florida
Rose Bowl Ohio State USC
Orange Bowl Virginia Tech West Virginia
Sugar Bowl Alabama Oklahoma
Fiesta Bowl Texas BYU
Cotton Bowl Texas Tech LSU
Gator Bowl Florida State Notre Dame
Capitol One Bowl Michigan State Georgia
Liberty Bowl Tulsa Ole Miss
Sun Bowl Nebraska Arizona
Chick-Fil-A Bowl North Carolina Auburn
Holiday Bowl Oregon Missouri
Independence Bowl UL – Lafayette Tennessee
Outback Bowl South Carolina Minnesota
Insight Bowl Kansas Northwestern
Champs Sports Bowl Illinois Wake Forest
Las Vegas Bowl Utah California
Alamo Bowl Oklahoma State Wisconsin
Motor City Bowl Ball State Rutgers
Humanitarian Bowl Fresno State Clemson
Music City Bowl Georgia Tech Kentucky
GMAC Bowl East Carolina Central Michigan
Texas Bowl Colorado UTEP
New Orleans Bowl Troy UCF
Hawaii Bowl Boise State Pittsburgh
Emerald Bowl SJSU Boston College
Meineke Car Care Bowl South Florida Miami, FL
Armed Forces Bowl Rice Air Force
Poinsettia Bowl TCU Western Michigan
Papajohns.com Bowl Arkansas State Cincinnati
New Mexico Bowl Louisiana Tech UNLV
International Bowl Uconn Buffalo
Congressional Bowl Navy Maryland
St. Petersberg Bowl Louisville Duke

With the Pac-10 more than likely unable to fulfill all their bowl agreements we should see extra teams from the MAC and Sun Belf earn bowl bids. Right now I have FAU, New Mexico State, Northern Illinois, and Temple all sitting at home with 6-6 records.

Woody’s Picks – Week 10 (Final Picks)

October 31, 2008

WEEK 10

LW 2-4.  Went 12-4 (!!) in top-20 gms LW, but, as has been the case all ssn, managed to write up only two here – both losers.  It’s a shame they played that Navy-SMU gm in a torrential non-stop rainstorm . . . but that’s the risk one takes writing up picks early in the wk; obviously wouldn’t have played it by the time it kicked off.  Oh, and it’s also a shame that VT’s starting QB inj. on gm’s first play from scrimmage, and back-up Glennon inj. in 3Q, resulting in some dude named Cory Clark(wasn’t he on American Idol 4?) QB’ing the final 21 minutes of a nip-and-tuck gm . . . but that’s why it’s called gambling.  Let the week 10 cavalcade of losing embark!

Hello again bootleggers! It is good to be back with you all again for the Naked Bootleg’s Pre-snap Read where we assure you that you will always get an unabashed, unbiased and uncensored view of college football. And of course this week will be no exception as we take a few minutes to talk about those jackasses out at North Texas that tested positive for drugs and stupid sports writers trying to create unnecessary hype. We will also be looking into match-ups between South Florida and Cincinnati, Northwestern and Minnesota, West Virginia and Connecticut, Florida State and Georgia Tech, Oregon and California, and because we are so generous, a 6th high level preview this week between the still undefeated Tulsa Golden Hurricanes and the often defeated Arkansas Razorbacks. And shall we not forget the two big ugly guys this week Georgia at Florida and Texas at Texas Tech.

NBL Two Minute Drill 10/26/2008

October 27, 2008

Welcome Bootleggers! This is the October 26th edition of the Two Minute Drill. Tonight we are able to do something a little different as we’re going to give you live analysis of the Tulsa/UCF game while in progress.

Since Tulsa is a potential NBL Top 20 team we will not have the Top 20 in the podcast this week, but you can find them on the website starting Monday afternoon. We’ll also give you our unabashed, unbiased and uncensored view of what happened this past weekend in college football, and go over the shakeups in the BCS so far.

The latest BCS standings have come out, and the top five haven’t changed as we have Texas, Alabama and Penn State, Oklahoma and USC at 1 through 5. Here are the current standings, and remember that only the Top 12 really matter as a non-BCS school must be in the top 12 or top 16 and ahead of the lowest ranked BCS conference champion.

1) Texas
2) Alabama
3) Penn State
4) Oklahoma
5) USC
6) Georgia
7) Texas Tech
8) Florida
9) Oklahoma State
10) Utah
11) Boise State
12) Ohio State

Normally this is where we would talk about this week’s NBL Top 20, but we’re holding off until tomorrow to release the poll since there is still a game in progress that has bearing on the rankings.

Randy’s Top 5
1 Texas
2 Alabama
3 Penn State
4 Oklahoma
5 Florida

Eric’s Top 5
1 Texas
2 Alabama
3 Penn State
4 Oklahoma
5 Florida

We had a relatively calm weekend with the teams at the top of the national polls, but teams in the lower part suffered some unexpected upsets. One team that has been resurgent over the past few weeks is Virginia who got an unexpected victory this weekend in Atlanta over Georgia Tech. Other upsets include Louisville over south Florida and Rutgers over Pitt.

Oklahoma State @ Texas
Boston College @ North Carolina
Penn State @ Ohio State
USC @ Arizona
Texas Tech @ Kansas
Ole Miss @ Arkansas

UCF @ Tulsa

Eric is now 37-25 on the year
Randy is no 35-27 on the year
Of course these records do not include tonight’s game.

A quick shout out of congratulations to our buddy Bob Hamm from Oklahoma. He and his bride are inducing labor on Tuesday and my understanding is he and his wife are expecting a future Sooner cheerleader, so congrats to them, and we’ll talk to you later in the week when we bring you the Pre-Snap Read.

Woody’s Picks – Week 9

October 24, 2008

WEEK 9

LW 4-6.  I had typed a rant about four more ridiculous Ls in an absurdly unfortunate ssn, but I deleted it in favor of dwelling on the positive.  If you didn’t watch the USC-WSU gm, you missed one of the most thorough whippings ever in a BCS conf. gm.  For those who had the stomach to lay 43 pts, kudos.  WSU never made it to midfield; SC tried not to run up the score, attempting only 1 pass the entire second half, but still added 28 pts to the drubbing.

Top 20 for October 19th, 2008.

October 24, 2008

No real surprises as we look at the top three this week. BYU of course dropped a few spots after their unexpected thrashing at the hands of the Horned Frogs down in Fort Worth. With both Texas and Oklahoma State entering their matchup this week undefeated, and the game between Ohio State and Penn State we will see at least two of the teams in the top 12 fall this week.

1 Texas

2 Alabama

3 Penn State

4 Oklahoma

5 Florida

6 USC

7 Ohio State

8 Georgia

9 Utah

10 Texas Tech

11 BYU

12 Oklahoma State

13 Boise State

14 LSU

15 South Florida

16 Missouri

17 TCU

18 Georgia Tech

19 Kansas

20 Tulsa

Receiving Votes: Ball State, Boston College, Pittsburgh

Honorable Mention: This week’s honorable mention goes to the team that has had the biggest turn around since last season, the 6-1 Minnesota Golden Gophers. Tim Brewster has made Minnesota relevant in just his second year, and with remaining games at Purdue, against Northwestern and Michigan, at Wisconsin, and against Iowa, you have to figure that the Gophers will finish no worse than 8-4 and get a nice bowl invite. This compared to a 1-11 record from last year is certain to make Gopher fans sing Brewster’s praises… at least until kickoff of next season.

NBL Bowl Outlook 10/20/2008

October 24, 2008

With Texas establishing their dominance in back to back victories against arguably the best to teams they will face in the Big 12, its hard not to put them in the drivers seat for the Championship Game. This current projection is based on the presumption that there won’t be an invite to the BCS for a non-BCS team, though I think it unlikely right now. In doing this, it highlighted the weakness of conferences not called SEC or Big 12.

National Championship Florida Texas
Rose Bowl Penn State USC
Orange Bowl Virginia Tech South Florida
Sugar Bowl Alabama Georgia Tech
Fiesta Bowl Oklahoma Ohio State
Cotton Bowl Texas Tech LSU
Gator Bowl Wake Forest Notre Dame
Capitol One Bowl Michigan State Georgia
Liberty Bowl Tulsa Auburn
Sun Bowl Nebraska Arizona
Chick-Fil-A Bowl North Carolina Ole Miss
Holiday Bowl Oregon Missouri
Independence Bowl Kansas Vanderbilt
Outback Bowl South Carolina Minnesota
Insight Bowl Colorado Northwestern
Champs Sports Bowl Wisconsin Florida State
Las Vegas Bowl BYU California
Alamo Bowl Oklahoma State Illinois
Motor City Bowl Western Michigan Purdue
Humanitarian Bowl Fresno State Maryland
Music City Bowl Boston College Tennessee
GMAC Bowl East Carolina Central Michigan
Texas Bowl Arkansas State UTEP
New Orleans Bowl Troy UCF
Hawaii Bowl Boise State Louisville
Emerald Bowl Arizona State Miami, FL
Meineke Car Care Bowl West Virginia Clemson
Armed Forces Bowl Rice TCU
Poinsettia Bowl Utah New Mexico State
Papajohns.com Bowl Kentucky Cincinnati
New Mexico Bowl Louisiana Tech Air Force
International Bowl Pittsburgh Buffalo
Congressional Bowl Navy Ball State
St. Petersberg Bowl Uconn Florida Atlantic

As is true every week there are some 6-6 teams that will be left out in the cold. Current projections have Northern Illinois, Temple, San Jose State, Louisiana-Lafayette, and UNLV all sitting home; however if any team is able to secure a 7-5 record this year under the current bowl agreements they will get invited considering the number of available bowl invitations.
