NBL Bowl Outlook 09/29/2008

September 30, 2008

This past weekend made it very difficult to sit down and figure out the bowl arrangements. Will the Gator Bowl take a shot at Notre Dame this year if they don’t make the BCS or will they hope that next year’s Fightin’ Irish don’t go gangbusters and make the BCS? Which teams from the Big 12 and SEC have the best shot at making it to the National Championship game, and after this past weekend, are USC, Ohio State, and Wisconsin eliminated from the debate?

Who knows at this point. Here is my best guesses at this point in the season and remember that these guesses are based on results and projection.

National Champtionship Missouri Florida
Rose Bowl Ohio State USC
Orange Bowl Wake Forest South Florida
Sugar Bowl Alabama Penn State
Fiesta Bowl Oklahoma BYU
Cotton Bowl Texas Auburn
Gator Bowl Florida State Notre Dame
Capitol One Bowl Wisconsin LSU
Liberty Bowl Tulsa South Carolina
Sun Bowl Texas A&M Arizona
Chick-Fil-A Bowl Virginia Tech Ole Miss
Holiday Bowl Oregon Texas Tech
Independence Bowl Kansas Tennessee
Outback Bowl Georgia Illinois
Insight Bowl Colorado Purdue
Champs Sports Bowl Northwestern UNC
Las Vegas Bowl Utah Arizona State
Alamo Bowl Nebraska Michigan State
Motor City Bowl West. Mich. Arkansas State
Humanitarian Bowl Fresno State Boston College
Music City Bowl Georgia Tech Vanderbilt
GMAC Bowl ECU Cent. Mich.
Texas Bowl Oklahoma State SMU
New Orleans Bowl Florida Atlantic UCF
Hawaii Bowl Boise State Troy
Emerald Bowl California Miami (FL)
Meineke Car Care Bowl West Virginia Clemson
Armed Forces Bowl Rice TCU
Poinsettia Bowl Air Force New Mexico St
Papajohns.com Bowl Kentucky UConn
New Mexico Bowl Louisiana Tech UNLV
International Bowl Cincinnati Buffalo
Congressional Bowl Navy Maryland
St. Petersberg Bowl Pittsburgh UTEP

Of course, no matter how many bowls there are, someone is always left out in the cold. I project that Ball State will have a legitimate gripe for sitting home with an 8-4 record, but that Louisville and NIU will both be at home with 6-6 records and should be thankful for that. I’m one of the old school believers that say that a bowl birth should be about more than having a .500 record, but considering that the NBL and NHL allow teams with under-.500 records into the playoffs, why not college football.

Top 20 for September 28th, 2008

September 30, 2008

No surprise that there is a lot of shakeup after this weekend’s games. Total shift in rankings, but not too much of a surprise at the top, but having the top three spots occupied by teams in the same conference is sure to make for some interesting discussions.

1 Oklahoma

2 Missouri

3 Texas

4 Alabama

5 BYU

6 USC

7 Penn State

8 Ohio State

9 Florida

10 LSU

11 Georgia

12 South Florida

13 Kansas

14 Wisconsin

15 Utah

16 Wake Forest

17 Virginia Tech

18 Auburn

19 Texas Tech

20 Vanderbilt

Receiving Votes: Boise State

Honorable Mention: UConn who is 5-0 on the year. They are currently on top of the Big East but face a tough test this week against UNC in Chapel Hill. With the way the Big East is imploding so far this year, I’d expect the Big East champ to be either UConn or USF.

NBL Two Minute Drill 09/29/2008

September 30, 2008

Welcome Bootleggers to the September 29th edition of the Two Minute Drill. Since there isn’t a lot of news to talk about right now outside of the upsets, we’re going to take a minute and talk Heisman contenders. We’ll also bring you the Naked Bootleg Top 20 and we’re going to spend a lot of time talking about the match-ups we previewed and all the upsets from this previous weekend.

We’ve finally reached the point in the year where we can comfortably talk about the Heisman candidates. Much like our NBL Top 20, we like to wait until we’ve had some games to actually evaluate the contenders in the Heisman race and see how the do against competition with a pulse.

After Further Review:
Upsets: Ore St over USC, Miss over FL, Mich over Wisc, Navy over Wake, Hou over ECU, and Bama took a huge lead over Georgia that they coulnd’t come back from.

Maryland @ Clemson
Tennessee @ Auburn
Fresno State @ UCLA
TCU @ Oklahoma
Virginia Tech @ Nebraska
Alabama @ Georgia
Illinois @ Penn State

Eric is now 20-15 on the year
Randy is now 16-19 on the year

NBL Bowl Outlook – 09/22/2008

September 25, 2008

After the first four weeks of the season we can see the bowl picture starting to take shape. The following projections are based on current rankings, current standings, and projected outcomes. Right now I see only 5 teams that really have a shot at playing for the National Championship. USC, Oklahoma, Florida, Missouri and Georgia. Texas, Wisconsin and Penn State have an outside chance, but will need all of the above mentioned teams to sustain a loss. Wake Forest and South Florida will have to run the table and have some luck on their side to get into the championship game much in the same way that BYU, Utah, Boise State, and TCU would have to do as well.

National Champtionship USC Florida
Rose Bowl Wisconsin Oklahoma
Orange Bowl Wake Forest South Florida
Sugar Bowl Georgia Ohio State
Fiesta Bowl Missouri BYU
Cotton Bowl Texas LSU
Gator Bowl Virginia Tech West Virginia
Capitol One Bowl Penn State Alabama
Liberty Bowl ECU South Carolina
Sun Bowl Texas A&M Arizona State
Chick-Fil-A Bowl Clemson Ole Miss
Holiday Bowl Arizona Nebraska
Independence Bowl Kansas Kentucky
Outback Bowl Auburn Illinois
Insight Bowl Colorado Iowa
Champs Sports Bowl Purdue Florida State
Las Vegas Bowl Utah California
Alamo Bowl Texas Tech Michigan State
Motor City Bowl West. Michigan Northwestern
Humanitarian Bowl Fresno State Boston College
Music City Bowl Georgia Tech Tennessee
GMAC Bowl Tulsa Cent. Michigan
Texas Bowl Oklahoma State SMU
New Orleans Bowl Arkansas State Rice
Hawaii Bowl Boise State Pittsburgh
Emerald Bowl Washington North Carolina
Meineke Car Care Bowl Notre Dame Miami (FL)
Armed Forces Bowl UCF Air Force
Poinsettia Bowl TCU New Mexico St.
Papajohns.com Bowl Vanderbilt UConn
New Mexico Bowl Louisianna Tech UNLV
International Bowl Cincinnati Ball State
Congressional Bowl Florida Atlantic Buffalo
St. Petersberg Bowl Louisville Troy

I also have Temple and Wyoming with 6-6 records and bowl eligible, but not enough bowl slots for them this year.

September 25, 2008

WEEK 5

LW 14-4 at The Mirage in Vegas.  Sorry I couldn’t get a column out LW, but time ran short, and then I had connectivity issues from Sin City.  I can tell you it was the best Vegas weekend I’ve had since 1997.  Despite an outstanding week, I will not be including those results in my stats.  On to this wk . . .

NBL Pre-Snap Read 09/24/2008

September 25, 2008

This is the Naked Bootleg’s Pre-snap Read where you will most certainly be getting an unabashed, unbiased, and uncensored view of college football. In this weeks program we will be looking to see if Maryland will have any success as they head into Death Valley to take on Clemson, which team recovers from losses as Tennessee heads to Auburn, Fresno State looks for road win at UCLA, TCU faces an uphill battle at Oklahoma, and Virginia Tech travels to Nebraska to take on the huskers. Our eyes, and many others, will also be looking into a critical big 10 match-up as Illinois heads to Penn State, and a big SEC showdown as Bama takes on Georgia between the hedges. All this and news around college football is coming your way.

And now it is time for Quick Hits!
According to a report on ESPN Syracuse athletic director Dr. Daryl Gross said Monday that the Orange football team has yet to show the “obvious progress” necessary for Greg Robinson to remain as football coach beyond this season.

“It isn’t working out,” Gross said of Robinson. “It’s very disappointing … He has some work to do out in front of him.”

The Orange are 1-3 this season as they prepare for their Big East Conference opener Saturday at home against Pittsburgh. Robinson, in his fourth season at Syracuse, has an overall record of 8-31. His scoring offense (14.9-point average) is the third worst among FBS programs since 2005.

ESPN is also reporting that Ohio State starting running back Chris “Beanie” Wells will return from injury Saturday against Minnesota barring any setbacks this week in practice, Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel said Tuesday.

Wells participated fully in Monday’s nearly two-hour practice and no longer is experiencing the lingering soreness in his right big toe, which kept him off the field in wins over Ohio and Troy and a 35-3 loss to top-ranked USC. He suffered the injury in the third quarter of the 14th-ranked Buckeyes’ season opener against Youngstown State.
There isn’t a whole lot of news to report that won’t be covered in The Scouting Report, but I do have some news related to The Naked Bootleg.

First off, for those that have their own podcasts, we have just created four new Promo MP3s that can be downloaded and played on your podcast or linked to in your blog. Please check out the article with the links to the Promos in the Quick Hits section of the website or feel free email us directly.

Alright…On to this week’s scouting report

What happened to the Worst of the Worst?

September 22, 2008

So…you might be wondering what happened to this seasons Worst of the Worst. Well, we are still here! Oh…the article. Shamelessly, we have been putting a lot of extra effort into other areas of the the Naked Bootleg, mainly, the podcasts, promotions, Top 20, and pretty much anything that wasn’t the “Worst of the Worst”. so, shame on us! We will now subject ourselves to severe beatings with wet <!– /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {mso-style-parent:”"; margin:0in; margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:”Times New Roman”; mso-fareast-font-family:”Times New Roman”;} @page Section1 {size:8.5in 11.0in; margin:1.0in 1.25in 1.0in 1.25in; mso-header-margin:.5in; mso-footer-margin:.5in; mso-paper-source:0;} div.Section1 {page:Section1;} –> spaghetti noodles. However, as penance, the NBL will now provide you with our best insight as to what schools will be playing in which bowls this post season. So check back right here for more unabashed, unbiased, ans uncessored views on college football.

NBL Two Minute Drill 09/21/2008

September 22, 2008

Welcome Bootleggers to the September 21st edition of the Two Minute Drill. The Naked Bootleg brings you “An unabashed, unbiased, and uncensored view of college football.” Tonight we’re talking about the latest on the conditions of Ball State receiver Dante Love and South Florida Linebacker Brouce Mompremier as well as bringing you the Naked Bootleg Top 20. We’ll also be reviewing the matchups from the past week and we have lots of news about the latest behind the scenes here at The Naked Bootleg.

I’m Randy Hinckley and with me tonight is the secret love child of William Shatner and Cher, my recording partner and heterosexual lifemate Eric Pound

.. Now that we’re all here, it’s time for Quick Hits!

Ball State WR Dante Love is moving his arms and legs after emergency surgery earlier today in Indianapolis. Love was injured in the game against Indiana this weekend when Hoosier DB Chris Adkins collided with Love’s helmet when defending him on a pass. Love was quickly attended to and was taken to a Bloomington hospital before being transferred to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

South Florida linebacker Brouce Mompremier has been released from the hospital after undergoing tests stemming from a collision with a teammate in the Bulls victory over FIU in Miami. Mompremier has been cleared of any spinal injuries and will be evaluated by team doctors this week to assess when he can return to action for USF. It is expected that he will miss the next two games which are against North Carolina State and Pittsburgh.

On to this week’s NBL Top 20.

Starting this week I’m adding a new little blurb to the NBL Top 20 called the Honorary Shout Out. This is reserved for a team not receiving votes in the Top 20 but that has done an excellent job for the week or in this week’s case, for the season. The Honorary Shout Out will be done once a week along with the Top 20.
1 USC

2 Oklahoma

3 Florida

4 Missouri

5 BYU

6 Georgia

7 Texas

8 Wake Forest

9 Wisconsin

10 Alabama

11 Ohio State

12 Kansas

13 South Florida

14 Penn State

15 Illinois

16 LSU

17 Florida State

18 Utah

19 East Carolina

20 Texas Tech

Receiving Votes: Boise St, Virginia Tech, Auburn

This week’s Honorary Shout Out goes to the least appreciated undefeated team of the season, the Vanderbilt Commodores who are currently 4-0 with two of those victories coming in conference against South Carolina and Ole Miss. It is VERY plausible for the Dores to go 3-5 over the last eight games and get a guaranteed bowl birth.

Vanderbilt now has two weeks to prepare for the daunting task of trying to scores on Auburn’s defense. Should the Commodores prevail that day I expect to see them in the NBL Top 20.

This has been a busy week for the promotions department here at the NBL. Of course this means that Eric and I have been putting in more hours getting all the work done because we can’t even afford bubblegum, much less a marketing department.

First, as I mentioned in the last episode of the Pre-Snap Read we now have 4 promos that can be played on your podcast or put up on your blog. You can find them in the Quick Hits section of the website or you can always get in touch with Eric or I by writing us at podcast@thenakedbootleg.com

We’ve also been getting some attention out amongst our fellow podcasters. You might remember that several weeks back Eric and I mentioned that we had developed a small story set in 7th City, the center of Mur Lafferty’s novel Playing For Keeps which came out on August 25th. Yesterday our story “Ruckus at Lafferty Field” was put out on her feed as the 18th episode of the Stories of the Third Wave. You can find the story at playingforkeepsnovel.com and you can find out more about Mur at her website murverse.com.

Lastly, I was asked earlier in the week to do the “Story So Far” for Seth Harwood’s Young Junius podiobook. The “Story So Far” is just a brief recap of the previous week’s episode but it allows me to go into Seth’s feed and plug NBL. I’ve been following the Young Junius story very intently over the past six weeks and it is definitely worth checking out, especially if you’re from the Boston area since the story is set in beantown in the 80s. You can find all of Seth’s stories at sethharwood.com.

What does this mean for The Naked Bootleg? Basically, it nets us a ton of exposure. Between Seth’s and Mur’s fans the NBL is going to be in front of about 25000 new sets of ears. Now it’s our job to make sure that when they check it out, they like what they hear and stay for a good long time.

After Further Review:

West Virginia at Colorado (Thursday night)

Florida at Tennessee

Notre Dame at Michigan St.

Georgia at Arizona State

Boise St. at Oregon

Wake Forest at Florida St.

LSU at Auburn

Eric is now 15-13 on the year
Randy is now 12-16 on the year

Randy rips into Comcast for being a piece of shit monopoly that doesn’t deliver on the services their customers pay for.

We do have one promo to play this week for a podcast called A Different Point of View which can be found at www.adpov.net. Many of you who are listening to this are geeks, whether you know it or not. I know that sounds like an odd statement, but the only thing separating your typical Star Wars geek from a sports nut is the topic and events you choose to geek out over. Sometimes these two worlds collide and sometimes there is something just so damn cool, you don’t give a rat’s ass how geeky it is.

No matter how un-geek you think you are, you all love Star Wars. Whether you’re 7 or 70, you’ve all quoted Obi-Wan Kenobi or Darth Vader, and you all wish you had your own lightsaber. But if you think you know the truth of what happened in Star Wars then you haven’t heard the whole story.

Thanks go out to my recording partner Eric Pound. It was good to have him back this week, and hopefully his work schedule will allow him to be home more often than on the road.
